My neighbours have a deck that covers more than 90% of their garden (previous owners installed), and have now installed a lean to extension which they called a pergola to the rear of their house and on top of the 8+ year old decking. This structure covers 75% of the garden, has a pitched roof, slats have been added to two sides (leaving one open side). They have also put perspect screens over the slates. They have several bright lights on the inside which now makes it look like a lit up space ship which impacts our garden and lounge with light coming through. This is much more than what they told us they were doing and is so close to our the boundary that we really don’t know what to do. It is a complete eyesore and feel like it will really devalue our property. Any advice? Not sure if they should have put in for Planning permission as I believe it falls outside of permitted development category. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get in contact with your Planning department.
As for de-valuing your property, it should not. But it may intially put some people off. But it’s still a buyers market.
