How to Find a Bathroom Installer?

May 15, 2012

  1. A recommendation is a good way to start, ask friends, family and work colleagues if they have had a bathroom installation recently or ask the showroom where you are planning to purchase your bathroom products from if they can recommend an installer. A bathroom showroom should already have checked out the installers that they recommend as they are putting their reputation on the line by putting you in touch with them, they will also be familiar with the products that the showroom sells.
  2. Always ask for references of recent work, check these out and call some previous clients, maybe even arrange to visit a previous installation. If they have been recommended by a showroom ask how long they have worked for them, and if they have installed displays in the showroom.
  3. Ask them what experience they have and do they use other contractors for specialist work. A modern bathroom installation will require many trades including plumbing, carpentry, plastering, electrics, tiling, decorating and templating for bespoke items. It is reasonable to expect that the bathroom installer will have to use other contractors for some of these areas of the installation.
  4. Ask the installer how long they are allowing for the installation, a good installer will be allowing 3 to 4 weeks for a good sized family room with bath and separate shower.
  5. Look at previous work and ask yourself have they done similar work before. An important skill that a bathroom installer requires is to overcome unforeseen difficulties during the installation, given that it is only when a bathroom has been removed can you see the exact location of all the pipe work, if there is any damage to the existing walls or floors hidden by just removing a bathroom. Nobody can expect every installation to run like clockwork, but it is good to know how an installer has overcome installation difficulties.
  6. If they are recommended by a showroom, ask how long have they worked for them and if they have completed displays in the showroom you can look at. If they don't do work in the showroom, ask yourself why?
  7. When you receive a quote take a time to review the quotation, don't just look at the bottom line. Does this include all the work required, is it relevant to your bathroom make sure it covers all the work required to complete the installation. A well-presented and prepared quote will help to demonstrate a professional approach to business.
  8. Look at their payment structure and make sure you aren't paying for the work until the installation is completely finished. Generally, installers will ask for a deposit, stage payments and the balance on completion.
  9. If at any time during an installation you are not happy or are unsure of what is happening, then always ask the installer, they will assume if you don't mention anything you are happy with the work and it is much more difficult to make changes at the end of the job than during.
