Design a Unique Living Room

June 27, 2012

Sometimes it seems that people are afraid to properly express themselves through their interior design. It's a sad fact that many of us just either don't have the time or aren't interested in making their homes a unique place to live. Other times, it just requires a nudge to get you going. This is that nudge.

It would take too long to talk about how to completely re-design your home, so this article is going to cover the place where you probably spend most of your waking time when not at work – the living room. This is a fantastically important space in your home, a place where you wind back, where you play with your kids and the place where you chat with visitors. A good living room leaves a lasting impression in anyone who steps into it. It should be inspirational. It should be unique.

Probably the biggest piece of furniture in your living room will be the sofa. There's a current trend towards leather, which is great but can be relatively boring since most people have them. If you do have a leather sofa, add some designer or colourful cushions to make the furniture pop (just make sure they don't clash).

Another thing that is going to be striking to anyone who walks in will be the wall art. If you have wall art, try not to buy from a high street retailer, since you're going for a unique look. There are independent stores, physical and online, where you can buy limited or one-of-a-kind pieces. Even try Folksy or Etsy for some of that hand-crafted love. It's guaranteed to get people asking where you got them. Don't forget about other art pieces too. Having urban vinyl art dotted around can act as great conversation pieces and also look interesting. Also, don't be afraid to display things that you love, items that are directly tied to your personality. Are you into medieval music? Keep a lute in the corner of the room. Little artefacts like this really add character to the space.

It's always nice to have a coffee table, but more often than not we settle for a glass or wooden table that doesn't look too inspiring. Consider getting some quirky nested tables that can act as a coffee table but also stands as a unique piece on its own merits.

Remember, you're an individual and your living room should reflect that. People should be able to see what kind of person you are when they sit in your room, so don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd.
