Storage and Space Saving Ideas

June 19, 2012

Space, or the lack of it, is a common complaint people make about their properties.

For some people it is a change in circumstance that motivates a desire for more space. More bedrooms may be needed to accommodate a growing family, or if you are going to start working from home, room for a home office may need to be found.

Every home, no matter what the size has potentially untapped spaces and there are many ways to maximise its hidden potential that don't necessarily involve major building works or a big budget. Creating an illusion of space using varying design devices can be wonderfully effective.  Finding efficient uses for awkward or hidden areas, creative use of colour and clever application of light can all add an extra dimension to your home.

De-Clutter

Personal items, old newspapers, magazines and children's play things get scattered in deposits around the home, and 'that' paperwork has somehow re-emerged in stacks in a corner.

One solution is to start dedicated 'clutter preserves'.  Like wildlife preserves, these are limited areas where clutter may live freely, so long as it stays within boundaries.  In a bedroom, one chair becomes the clutter preserve.  Clothing may be thrown with abandon, so long as it's thrown on the chair.

A kitchen junk drawer can house vitamin bottles, rubber bands, clipped recipes, expired coupons and shopping receipts unwelcome outside their clutter preserve.  A large magazine bucket in the living room is fair game for catalogues and magazines, so long as they can fit inside the bucket.

Kids

Catering for the growing family in a small house is often seen as space sacrificing. The spare room, which used to house the gym equipment, is now the children's room and can no longer store the much loved treadmill and dumb-bells.

Children's rooms are usually small, often shared, and generally lack built-in storage. Yet these rooms often play host to outdated/outgrown clothing, superfluous toys, and even household overflow from other rooms.

Clever shelving and hidden storage

Every home has neglected areas that can be exploited to unlock hidden space. Look at the installation of clever shelving and hidden storage. Even the most humble of domestic spaces can be transformed into a stylishly designed storage haven. It's amazing what a little imagination and fresh ideas can do.

When floor space is at a premium making the most of walls or existing features can create that much needed storage space. Think about framing doorways with shelving. This can turn an unused space into an attractive display area. Furniture with a dual purpose can also be a great solution for smaller rooms. For example, sturdy storage can be transformed into extra seating with the addition of a cushion and your storage can be made mobile by adding wheels allowing you to make the maximum use of the floor space.
