DIY home improvements that are insanely easy
July 6, 2012
DIY need not be difficult or time consuming. Not everyone has the necessary level of skill to paint a mural or re-purpose a piece of furniture, but there are plenty of quick and easy ways to add a touch of style and flair to your home at almost no cost.
Updating the look of your home on a budget doesn't make your belongings any less valuable, so be sure to compare contents insurance policies to find the one that best suits your needs. That way you know you will get total piece of mind at the best possible price.
Inexpensive Ideas
Nothing says home like the smell of coffee but rather than investing in an expensive espresso machine, there's a cheap and easy way to enjoy the aroma all day long. Simply fill ramekins with coffee beans and then place a tea light into the centre of each. As the candles burn they heat up, warming the surrounding beans and causing them to release their delicious scent.
Cheap photo frames make a great basis for kitchen chalkboards to help remind you of what to buy the next time you head out to the shops. Paint the frames your favourite colour then coat the glass with chalkboard paint. Once the paint is dry, your new board will be ready to use. Another way to give old picture frames a new lease of life is to glue discarded wine corks to them, turning them into stylish notice boards or somewhere to pin your favourite postcards.
Are you a fan of glossy magazines? You could recycle them once you've read them but you could also re-purpose them into a piece of furniture. Stack them neatly, place a pillow on top and use two belts - one at each end - to hold the whole thing together. Not only will you have a comfy stool, but also a great conversation piece.
However, no matter how cool your furniture is, there are times when nothing beats sprawling about on the floor. For added comfort, take five pillows with identical cases and sew them together end to end to make one long, super-snug body pillow.
Storage
Many households find themselves running short of storage space. Rather than keeping your Christmas lights in a box in the attic, why not display them all year round? Squeeze an entire string into a glass jar and switch them on for fun and funky mood lighting. If you want a more subtle effect, empty the contents of a glow stick into an empty jar and add some glitter, then replace the lid and shake to create the perfect garden lantern.
Shoes are another challenge when it comes to storage. One great - and low cost - way of keeping them organised is to stack short lengths of plastic pipe against a wall in a honeycomb pattern and store a pair of shoes inside each one. Old paint tins are a good alternative to pipe if you don't have any lying around.
Little Touches
When it comes to making a home your own, it's often the little touches that people notice. Make your keys stand out from the crowd - and help yourself to tell them apart - by painting the ends with brightly coloured nail polish.
Jazz up plain white mugs by drawing on your own designs with a marker pen. Baking the mugs for 30 minutes at 350F will help your artwork to remain in place through several wash cycles.
