Camper van permission on own land

My wife, myself and our two children would like to buy a piece of land, preferably Devon or Wales, and would like to live in our van on the land. Perhaps with a simple compostable toilet and outdoor shower of sorts. It is my understanding this is illegal without planning permission. Has anyone had any experience with getting this permission and was it difficult or impossible to obtain? Many thanks In advance. Tim

If there is no residential property on the site, the siting of the caravan would not be incidental and would therefore require Planning.
