I had planning permission for and built a small balcony outside the french windows of a bedroom on my loft conversion. The balcony sits on top of a flat roof from a previous kitchen extension. I recently extended the balcony to cover the whole of the flat roof. I mistakenly thought I didn't need planning permission and when my next door neighbour complained I was visited by a planning officer who has advised me to apply for retrospective permission. Only one neighbour has complained, my other neighbour has absolutely no problem with it, even though it's closer to their house. It does not allow us to see into anyone's window, it simply looks out over gardens and gives us virtually the same view of neighbours' gardens as before. Are the objections of one jealous neighbour likely to mean I have to remove the balcony?

In the determination of any planning application, the planning authority will have to give due consideration to the impact that a proposal may have on adjoining neighbours. Its size, visual impact on street scene are other factors.
