- Finding status of planning application refused by local authority and sent to appeal

My local authority, the London Borough of Barnet has refused planning for extra floors / storeys on a local block - following active opposition by local residents.
On Barnet's website the status is "Decision: Prior Approval Required and Refused"
The Appeal status is: "Appeal Status Unknown"
Somewhere I read (maybe it was in a circular from the residents' committee), that the application refusal has been "appealed" by the developer and referred to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. I have tried to find the status of this appeal on the planninginspectorate.gov.uk website, section:CaseSearch entering various search criteria such as the postcode of the proposed development - but the site returns no found entries.
1. Am I searching in the correct place for this planning appeal?
2. Is there a website that describes the process for following this application / appeal? I have read the process is "calling in" a planning application - but beyond that I can't find the process to follow or get involved in this application / appeal - if that is possible.
Thanks in advance for any clarification anyone can offer on this part of the planning process.
Question also posted on diydoctor forum.
