Garden Size

We are looking to move house but the new house would need us to extend in the future. It sits on a new estate so the garden space is at a premium although this is a corner plot so better than most on the development. I need to know what the planning regs are around sufficent garden space for a home. I remember reading something about planning being rejected because the garden size would be taken below what is deemed attractive to a future owner.
Does anyone know what the limit is on outdoor space please?
