I need advice as whether I would need to apply for planning permission for a new brick built garden boundry wall. There is already an existing brick wall and timber fence which encloses the garden. The proposed wall will be built inside the existing wall/fence after the existing wall/fence has been demolished. The finished height of the wall is the same as the existing-about 1.8m

Elaine,

In most cases, there is no general control over the materials that can be used for this particular purpose and it is down to the individual to decide what they prefer.

Garden wall that borders a highway.

I have read that if a garden wall is over 1 meter in height and borders a highway then planning permission is required. Does this mean that if the wall is only 1 meter in height and borders a highway then planning permission is not required? What I would like to do is have a brick wall built to a height of 600mm and then topped with an iron railing 400mm in height so the total height would only be 1 meter. At the moment there is a hedge in this location and this is what I would like to replace.
