Building on farmland

Basically, we live on a farm with 15 acres of our own land all around us. We have a disused barn crying out to be renovated but it is attached to the house - renovating to let it out would negate the benefits of the privacy etc we currently enjoy. However, the farmhouse is too big for us but the area and position is idyllic. What would be the chances of building perhaps a bungalow within the farmstead? I'd love an eco place, single storey and more manageable. Don't know where to start! Any info would be very much appreciated. Thank you
