Permitted Development - Outbuilding

Hello,

Can I please ask a question regarding Permitted Development for Outbuildings (Class-E). I understand they have to be separate, however how close can they be to the house? Can they be connected by a canopy / covered walkway?

It would have to be physically detached from the dwelling.
